Got this stock a few weeks ago and got some time to pot up and wire a little to fill out a bit.

Hopefully the wiring allows those patches to fill in better fingers crossed.

Wiring may spread the branches a bit but will not cure those long, bare branches.
Azaleas are more basal dominant than apical dominant so they will sometimes shoot out new shoots on lower bare branches but pruning is the only cure I know of for long, straight bare branches.
Azaleas shoot prolifically when pruned, even right down to the base so there's no reason to avoid cutting.

Howdy Wiggs, nice stock. If ever you feel like a more radical departure - there seems to be a natural bend that might lead to a tree with the shape of my crap line drawing below.

Perhaps my mind is not fully switched on as I scan AusBonsai
(on a packed train) but just thought I would float the concept for consideration.

Bonsai teaches me patience.
