Finally a couple of cold nights.
Official BOM reports -2 at nearby Beechworth and Albury but I had reports of outside thermometers showing -4.5C here at Yackandandah this morning.
I think there's a Chinese elm variety called Frosty? maybe this is it. More shots of the nursery

I had two -4.4 so far Neil. I have a suspicion tonight may go -6. Days hadnt warmed up much at all. I think it is here.

It was 5° C here this morning, and that's in sunny and warm Qld!

Pretty sure it was colder again this morning.
Many natives don't mind a bit of cool: Leptospermum petersonii were significantly burnt for several years when young but as they age they seem to become more resistant and no damage so far this year.
Ficus are snug in the poly house where temps do not get quite as low.

Even Mediterranean trees can cope: Last year I had a number of pots break due to sub-zero temps shattering low quality ceramic. It's a bit early to be counting chickens yet but no losses so far

Do you water them before the sun hits, or leave the ice to melt on its own?

All the trees in the open are frost tolerant so there's no need to worry about watering the frost off early before the sun. Not sure whether watering the pots would stop them cracking?

I've only heard that watering the trees before the sun hits them can sometimes stop damage, but being in the sub-tropics we don't get many days of frost. As for the pots, I guess that's something else that could be interesting. I've seen pics of pots wrapped in towels where the weather is likely to produce frost or snow, so maybe a wrapping would be a better option than a hosing...

If I ever move to a frosty area, I guess I'll need to find these things out! Good luck with your pots.
