Hey, I purchased some seeds from the only Australian based eBay seller of JBP seeds and have had none germinate yet. I did manage to get some other JBP seed from someone else and have had germination. So either the eBay ones are just slower to germinate, or I got a bad batch. Just thought I’d give you a heads up.

I’ve also ordered the eBay seeds with same results as Miikeboyle, on top of that they are sold as JBP “thunderhead” which are known as a variety that is quite coarse growing and so not as amenable to bonsai (particularly smaller size, shohin etc...). On top of that you would need to go through quarantine I think to bring them in from interstate (since you’re in WA) or source them from your state. Mmmm... I wish you luck, you never know I guess!

I don’t want to piss on Ryceman’s strawberries because his seed grown pines are wonderful, and a far better place to start than young stock from a nursery; but I have a little experience working with WA import laws on plant material and they can be very tight owing to officially not having some pests or diseases the east coast has. I say officially because more than likely they do in fact have them.

Might be better to start with a young nursery stock plant cost and headache wise if you have a bonsai nursery within cooee of you. Or search far and wide within WA for seed.

You either have to know someone in WA, or use the aforementioned Ebay seller. For the record I've got 3 little 'Thunderheads' poking their thunderous little heads out right now so the seed (my packet at least) is viable. There was no discernable delay getting them from over east so I assume no quarantine attention.

I tried getting some from treeseeds online in the US, as well as some Ezo but they were intercepted at quarantine. I don't expect to see those ones.

If you join the Bonsai Workshop you would probably come across a source.

Hi I had luck with about 3 out of 10 Jbp seeds purchased from ebay. They did take a while though.

Do you think it would be too late to start some seeds at this time of year? I just bought some on ebay and am thinking of giving it a go, otherwise is it best to keep them in the fridge until next winter

Past reports indicate that JBP seed will germinate well without any stratification and should grow fine at this time of year.
If you do want to store any seed keep dry in airtight container in cool dark place to extend viable life of the seeds. Fridge is good

Will post some photos when i get a chance..i've already root prune them..I made 1 seedling cutting hope it survives. @Shibui..will it be better to keep the seed moist in the fridge rather than dry?Cheers guys

Hey after reading Ryceman's thread, this thread and others - I wondered how to collect seeds if I had black pines around my neighbourhood. Hi shibui, do you cover your seeds with a plastic dome? Or do you water often before the seed strikes?
