Hi guys, I have an elm that I am growing for Shohin. The trunk is so small you can barely see it although to be fair, some of it s below the soil line. The tree has been growing at a phenomenal rate. I am using dynamic lifter, seasol once a fortnight in the growing season and Miracle gro once a month. I also spray a fine mist of diluted dynamic lifter liquid fert. on the foliage about every 2 days. The tree is still growing phenomenally fast but many of the new shoots are going brown at the tips. Could this be from anything other than overfeeding?

check for bugz, you may have watered in the hot sun just as they were opening etc...

but i wouldn't stop feeding it, it still looks healthy to me and these things can take the amount you're giving it all too easily.

Hey Jester although your fertilizing regime sounds fine, many trees will store nutrients for long periods. If your elm is growing at a fast rate then you could assume the fertiliser is doing its job. I would guess without seeing but I would say the little tree has had enough fertilizer for the shorter term. Try reducing your fertilizer to just once every 2 - 3 weeks liquid (seasol etc) low concentration for about 6 weeks. If the browning stops then the answer was slighty over fertilised. If it continues let me know and I'll have another stab in the dark. Hope this helps Mase

Hey Mason, nice to talk to you again after meeting you at Berry Markets. I am inclined to agree with what you said and will back off for a while. Looks like my Serissa are a bit tougher than Mr Elm. They don't seem to complain regardless of what I throw at them.!!

Trees ideally should be watered in the morning so the pots go from wet to semi dry by evening. Watering in the last afternoon-evening is not the best way to go habitually. On really hot days I water in the morning, then water selected trees mid afternoon and refresh them all and very late afternoon will top up the several who like a lot or are in small pots. But unless the day is a scorcher I don't water the foliage late in the day as that encourages damp leaves and various ailments. Suggest you change your watering to mornings.
