Sad maple on the rebound

Hey guys,

Is there an infirmary page to post problems? Couldn’t find one so thought I’d post here, hope that’s alright.

Maple got real sad, leaf tip burn and generally unhappy. I use osmocote pellet fertiliser for potted plants and gave half the dose to the recommended.
As you’ll see, the maple is in a normal 15-20cm pot, not a bonsai pot.
I immediately thought it may be over fert, so scooped off the majority of the fert, flushed the soil and moved inside.
I grow my plants on an easterly facing balcony so can get pretty intense in the sun, not to mention some little critter is eating any new shoots.I also removed the wiring which has left some markings. White spots have formed along the crest of the grooves from the wiring. I think it may be powdery mildew. Gave the plant a spray of eco neem and seems to be subsiding. Guessing due to her weakness the mould took hold.
She’s putting out new shoots which are growing quite well. Hesitant to prune them back due to her weak state.

Any and all thoughts much appreciated.

On another note, any thoughts on sphagnum as a top layer? I hear positive and negative things....

let it grow....don't keep it inside. If it's too hot outside drape some lightweight fabric over it during the hottest days...take it off at night.

Great, I’ll let it grow out then. Have it behind the balcony glass door so does get light, but it’s intermodal spacing is getting pretty long, stretching quite a bit. I’ll get it outside and buddy it up with my fern in the only shady spot. Have to bring it indoors every night though as otherwise it’s on the midnight menu!
