Hi,

I bought this relatively young Japanese Black Pine from a nursery in Jan 2020 and repotted it a few days after I got it.
Since then it's been thriving but over the past week or so the needles have started turning yellow and drooping. As of this weekend, they've almost all turned brown and my plant doesn't look well.

I've done some reading and thought it may have been over-watering; with all the rains we've had in Sydney but I'm not sure.

I've attached some photos and would love some help, please. If it is overwatering what can I do to fix it? Or if it's something else, what could it be and how can I fix it?

It's dead. But don't give up. Start again with a better tree.

My first dead tree... guess it had to happen sometime.

Mike, do you have any idea what it could have been so I can try to prevent another one like this?

I don't think this is dothostroma. That usually makes pines sick but doesn't kill them suddenly.
Far more likely the tree was too dry at some stage. It is very easy for a little pot to get dry if you miss watering, possibly only one day is enough. Pines don't show dead straight away like most others so by the time you notice you have forgotten that you were away for a weekend or slept in one day and forgot to water it.
Over watering can also lead to the same symptoms but that's much more uncommon in my experience.
The other think that can kill pines is keeping them inside. Looks like this one was outside, at least for the photo. Plenty of light and at least some direct sun each day is a must for pines to stay healthy.
