Hi guys,
I recently acquired this, I believe it's a peach, and was saddened to brush away the dirt and uncover the sight you see before you

Anyway, there's always options, but would love some advice on what would maybe be the best option....
I currently like the twin main branches aspect, but if you think it would help with the taper issue, I'm ok with singling it down.
I've thought of layering around the trunk but it would make the trunk too short in my opinion, plus the nebari I currently have is workable, so it would be a shame to lose that. But hey, sacrifices are a dime a dozen in this business....

Any suggestions on this good Friday would be welcomed strongly!

I agree, I like the twin trunks ... if it were me, I'd give it away to a nice guy with the words "lego" in his user name, hahaha

I'm guessing you don't want to start a new style of bonsai called the "hour glass" style? I would probably strip back the bark, as if doing an air layer, raising the soil level and start a new root system, would take a while to develop, but you might end up with more evenly spread nebari, than the single root I can see in these pics.

Edit of what I have in mind, again, just my amateur experience in the world of bonsai.

Your advice is greatly appreciated. I didn't want to agree, but yeah, I think the only way to fix this is to do what you've described and layer off the top hourglass bulb from the bottom hourglass bulb.

hmmm, i dunno.....

I’m with Legoman.

Air layering off both branches will only result in two ho-hum new trees, whereas what will be the new double trunk (if you just do one layer at the base) looks quite interesting.

In my view, the only other option is to jin and carve one of the two branches and extend a shari down onto the ‘hourglass’ and carve it out a bit. You see many nice flowering cherries and plums etc. with old carved wood, so this could work for a peach. BUT, you typically only see it on trees with really rugged, gnarly old bark - so I don’t think that this would give the best result, but it is literally the only other thing that I can think of.

Based on Legoman’s virt, you will have quite a pretty starting point.

Thanks Nathan, you know I had not even thought of the whole jin and shari option that you described. I have seen similar things done, come to think of it. It's definitely an option, that's for sure.
