Autumn 2020

Australian conditions vary from one extreme to another. What do you do and when do you do it?

Autumn 2020

Post by shibui »

Some recent cool nights have triggered some deciduous trees to start shutting down for winter.
The result is color.

Tridents are usually the first to change. For some reason my trident groups are usually earlier than the other tridents.

Gingko is another that colors early

Many of my deciduous are still under shade cloth so autumn color will not be as strong this year. The trident starters in small pots have been fully exposed to both sun and cold so they have stronger color.

Interesting that you find Ginkgo colours early in your neck of the woods, down here in S.E Melbourne I find they are consistently one of the last. Really nice colour you’re getting this year :tu:

One of my Chinese Elms is under way, as is a little root cutting Crepe Myrtle that came from the garden. My tridents are firmly green though.

After saying that i find Ginkgo to colour late.....

dwarf ginkgo starting to colour up. I really like Ginkgo in unglazed pots, it seems to be a thing to put them in glazed ones but i like the yellow against the brown. I've had this Terahata Mazan pot in my pot cupboard for a few years having purchased it on a whim, it works well with the ginkgo i think. You can see the chinese elm in the background also getting into the autumn spirit.

Ginkgo biloba firmly green still though

Arakawa airlayer leaf

Crepe myrtle garden tree under way, the canopy spread that i couldn't get all in the photo would be easily 8-10m

That berberis certainly puts on a good show.
Two of my English elms still quite green while another has lost nearly all the leaves already an I did not even notice the color.

It’s got nice colour this year ,every year it is a little different . It needs full sun to get the fire colours .
My elm bonsai all turned at the same time , the landscape ones are still green even with the frosts . Probably because of the hot dry summer and then the good rain in early autumn they just want to grow .

A couple of quick shots from around a wet garden this morning

Shishigashira airlayer starting to change. some yellows and neon pinks in there
shishilayer.jpeg

JM "Arakawa' airlayer. It's rock solid in the sphagnum moss so the roots must be getting on well. Cross fingers for getting through winter

JM "Sagara Nishiki" going blood red this year

Crepe Myrtle in the garden doing some really strong colours
