Hello all. I was wondering what month would be best to try my first Air Layering of a Japanese Maple here in Perth.
Any help would be great. I have seen a bit on you-tube however none from Australia.

Best time is probably after the new leaves harden in spring. I have tried a few earlier in spring just before buds open but all of those failed.
Later in spring and summer should still be OK. The long growing season should allow enough roots to grow before they shut down for winter.
In theory you should even be able to do a layer now. The tree will go dormant for winter so probably not enough time to get good roots before they go dormant for winter but there is still some very slow activity over winter and come spring it should take off earlier than any spring layers. I have not tried that hence the qualifier of theory only.

I added 3 air layers to a maple in early March and can already see some roots. I am in Melbourne.

Morning all, As l have only just done the 2 air layering this last week. One is a thinner layering than the other. I was wondering if there is any information on adding a weak dose of Seasol to the thinnest one of the layerings when I need to keep the moss moist to see if this encourages more root growth. Or maybe make another air layering same size as the thin one and this time when I remoisten the moss.. do it in a weak dose of Seasol and then keep the moss damp with the same Seasol mix. What are you thoughts?. It would be an interesting experiment. And take photos of the results.
