My family have bought me a gorgeous Chinese Elm grouping bonsai for Mothers Day, however there are training wires that the elms have grown around, should I remove the wires or leave them? If I remove them do I need to seal the 'wounds' and if I do what should I use to seal them, there are no dedicated Bonsai nurseries around my area only Mitre 10 who has a few trees, pots and wire. Age is unknown.

I would leave the wire alone the damage is done. You would only do a lot more damage trying to remove it. The tree will eventually completely grow over the remaining wire and the current scars will heal and disappear over time.

Hi Kate , I agree with Kirky , too late to remove wire now . Personally I think the odd scar adds character to most trees !

I third that advice. Leaving the wire in now is going to add really nice character once it's fully grown over anyway. What a lovely mother's day present. I bet its well deserved too
