This is my fist post in some years as I revive my interest in Bonsai.

Im glad to see the AB community is still strong.

This may not be solely bonsai related but I have purchased 8 trees from Neil to plant in the ground to thicken for a few years.

I was wondering what preparation, if any, people carry out to ground grow their trees?

I currently have an area in the garden where I have some pineapples and Chinese elm trees growing. I would like to add my new trees to this area but dislike the amount of weeding required.

Should I place weed control matting down then some mulch? Or just kill the grass and lay mulch?

See attached photo of the area. It will receive full sun for about 10 hrs a day.

I would love to see everyone's ground growing department....

I use glyphosate to keep the weeds at bay in my grow patch then hand weed closer to the trunks. I also use lots of mulch to help deter weeds from coming back.
Weed mat might help but I've seen lots of weeds growing through weed matting. Some perennials like couch can grow through weed mat. New seeds that blow in can send roots down through the weed mat too. Weed mat is not perfect but it will help.
Similar story for mulch. It will help but will not stop all weeds.
I don't think there's any way to completely stop the weeds. Just some things that may slow them down a bit.

Thanks Neil, I can't really use Glyphosate as I have the Pineapples. I might use vinegar to kill the grass and weeds and lay the mulch.

I dont think there is a way to get away from the weeds. Just keep on top if it.

Much depends on the type of weeds. Annuals are reasonably easy to manage but still keep coming in.
Creeping perennials are much more persistent and will need a lot more work to keep under control.

How about a raised bed? I use besser blocks which will elevate the trees for easy pruning and digging as well as providing a separation from the lawn. Ensures good soil as well.
