heres a juniper i bought as my second tree ever got it in june loved it then as my eye for bonsai got better i hated it thought about airlayering in but folded it in half

nice work dayne, i like your thinking and the way you have done this, it works well if you ask me now if this were mine i would start work on the shari and live veins, if you look up a thread on here jow goes into some detail about how to make trees like the japanese nurseries, type something like that in the search and you should find it if not i will find the link later after work.
doing this you will have a sweet as awesome twisted deadwood and live vein juniper, the process is simple yet very effective starting with a very small shari running up and around the trunk on two sides to create the live veins then every year you widen the shari by about 3mm as you go on the shari gets wider and you end up with a wide plate like dead wood that is far more interesting than a round trunk

Yes I see that the pics are out of order but only need to see the first and last pics to see what's going on. Gss you've done a nice job mate. The fold is at the right place and you've picked a good viewing angle for the front. This juniper has a thick enough trunk for some good exposal of dead wood. I love dead wood on junipers but haven't got a decent one to work with. Please keep posted with future progress.

generally speaking the branches of a juniper follow the live veins down the trunk to the root it corresponds with, if the trunk spirals so does the vein, it can be hard to follow on young junipers, so expect a couple of branches to be lost, but that wont be an issue right now during growth and development stage.
i have started several shari on my shimpaku in the literati comp, what i have done is break the shari up so it is not one continuous line but broken up in stages, then i will join them next year and widen a bit, so far i havent had an issue

it would be fine for you to do it as the sap will be flowing and it will make it easy to take the bark off and it will also allow the sap to redirect to a certain extent, junipers have this ability.

hi i have just lost the top left branch made a small jin and a little shari and a small one at the base will slowly extend them over time
