Howdy Folks,

I am interested to gather thoughts on what type of tree may suit this ripper pot.

For background - keels kindly gifted me a quince and it was in this pot; keels knew it was a PK pot and loves PK’s pots but was not so fond of this one so was happy to let it go ... whereas I like it a lot.

The world would be boring if we all liked the same stuff!

Anyway - I would love thoughts on what type of tree may suit this rugged little pot?

What about one of those really lovely imported, rusty, barbed wire trees?

I often think left-field but that’s probably a step too far ... even for my weird view of the bonsai world!!

Hmmm i remember that pot i never had a tree that suited... i hope your find something that would fit

A coastal tea tree, or any other Lepto or Kunzia. nice pot

Very fine pot, it will demand a strong tree to sit in it. Because the pot it is quite deep, it will need a thickish trunk. Because it is square, it can't be a particularly sideways-moving tree. Because the texture is quite coarse, it will not be a smooth tree, it will need to be quite rugged in outlines. There are your parameters - go for it! It should be fun.

Or send it here. I don't have a tree for it, but it would make me work much harder.

What a great looking pot! It looks like it was carved from granite, sculpted. I'm with Gavin. It needs a tree with a strong character, something rugged with a thick, squat trunk. ...... If you start now you may have one of those in maybe 30-40 years. Good luck with finding a suitable tree for it.

I say play to the pot and go with a native that is at home in a rocky area, perhaps something like a Kunzea baxteri? Or forget looking for a piece of stock with a strong trunk and maybe try a clumping style Thryptomene?

My first thought was a chunky casuarina

I can see a Banksia serrata in the pot.

I think a sumo corky bark Chinese Elm would look good.

I won’t put this Black Pine in this pot .... mainly because it won’t need a repot for another year or two and I think the pot may need to be a tad deeper but this gives a good sense on the thickness of tree and roughness of bark - I think. (Pot size/perspective skewed by the forward position of the pot.)




I think a rough barked flowering/fruiting variety could work too.

Also - would a knarly clump of chojubai work?

Not that I have the above two trees ... just throwing ideas around.

I think your on the right track there with the pine, but I would put a tree with a much heavier and coarser trunk. Also it needs to be a bit taller. I really love the pot, it really needs a brilliant tree
