Repotting is in full swing in my shed this week and right now it's Pines.These two were bought from Bonsai Mujo about 5 years ago.

The first was taken to a workshop run by Joe Morgan-Payler 2 years ago and was potted into it's current pot the same year. The second has been growing in a large plastic pot the whole time and I was expecting to have to reduce the pot size gradually over a few years but when I combed out the roots I was happy to see that the root ball wasn't very big so I was able to get it into the pot I wanted without any troubles. I'll probably give it a rest from de-candling this year, depending on the strength of the first flush of candles. If you look carefully you'll see that I've (gasp) cut the needles but both these trees are a few years away from displaying.

Nice pines. I reckon cut needles look great. Haven't done it myself yet though.

The goal is to get the needles to grow to the length you want. Cut needles will brown off at the tips and look ugly, plus it's considered cheating. But if a tree is in it's early stages, cutting the needles shorter can help get air and light into the canopy.

Interesting trunk lines on these Matt, they look great and will only get better as the tops get a bit more refinement in the coming years. Nice trees.

Gee Matt - two rippers in development - number one looks like a fantastically interesting tree in the making with that trunk.
