This is arguably the best hawthorn I have dug. It has a lot of very good characteristics - movement in the trunk; thick wide trunk; trunk with aged bark; I can still lift it; plenty of foliage to pick from, it flowers; it fruits; eventually it should look good naked; it is healthy AND the trunk is hollow.
The story is I dug this in August 2018 on a dig organised by the Goulburn Bonsai Society and it had been through a couple of floods and at least one bush fire. The hollow trunk had burn marks all the way to the ground however that charcoal look has dissipated since living the live of luxury at my place.

Thats a really good looking Hawthorn, its got it all. Looking forward to watching this one being developed great score.
Time to start thinking about making another pot Watto.

A decision was made to make this the front.

In November 2019 it was "engineered" and wired to give it some initial shape for the future, unfortunately I don't have any photos so you will have to trust me!
Today it was time for the next step which was the late spring early summer prune after the spring growth had hardened off.

A look at some of the "engineering" that is yet to be removed.

Beautiful stock Watto, love how the callous rolls over old dead wood.

This is the after trim look. There is plenty of work still to be done and hopefully the next step will happen in autumn just after leaf fall. At that time I will completely wire all the tree that is not cut off and that should set it up for the next 12 months.
More about this tree as it progresses.

Thanks Kirky, if I can I will always go for Yamadori with some movement because I think it adds something. Not sure about the pot, the bigger the pot the more difficult but I may discuss it with my teacher this week.

That bark is just gorgeous! A pot it high light that would be the go. Lovely tree

Great find Watto. Most of the hawthorns I come across are dead straight - I'm just a little bit jealous!

Keels, its a good bending technique for many plants and applications, worth the investment in a couple pieces of reo.
