I Was in Brisbane recently and visited a bonsai nursery as I'm sure we all do when travelling. Because my brother lives there and I intend to move back this year I picked up this tree and have left it with him to look after until I get back. It looked to have good potential with movement down low and good root spread.

I plan to keep it shohin size, first priority is to keep it alive.

Definitely a good starter. Hope your brother looks after it well and keeps it alive.
p.s. Good choice of lifestyle moving up here.

Spent most of my life up there, not sure how the trees I will bring up from down here will fair though. I was surprised by the number of Maples that were for sale at the nursery. From what I understand they don't go very well in that climate.
