Moreton Bay Figs

Most people who live in Adelaide would be familiar with the Moreton Bay figs that grow in and around the Botanic Gardens. Like many others, I have strong memories as a kid of running around and hiding amongst the buttress roots. Because of our dry climate these figs never grow aerial roots so the trunks are quite bare and the buttress roots are exposed in all their glory.

My family are regular visitors to the gardens, and last week we were there to enjoy the good weather during the holidays.

I love those trees - I have lots of good memories playing on those roots too. Better than any playground I reckon! My daughter is just getting to a good climby age so I'll need to start taking her there.

Love those roots.
There are a couple of Moreton bay figs in a paddock close to Beechworth with roots like that.

If only we could get them to do it in pots :shake:

Enjoyed those trees and the F. thonningii on my commute home yesterday. Some of the roots are starting to push the bike path up in places - hard to see in the dim light underneath the canopies. Fortunately some bright spark has panted a yellow line on the bike path to indicate the rough spots, so I knew where they were - after I hit the first one of course :shake:

As a kid I remember our parents having champagne breakfasts under those trees. We would be climbing all over them and then we'd go run amock in the botanic gardens.
Man, that's some far away time memories.

Thanks is for posting Matt - beautiful. Interesting that these sinuous, almost flowing roots can imbue so much power. Nature’s a ripper.

Oh man, just took me down memory lane. I was born in Adelaide and used to run around those with my sister when we were young. Thank you for sharing!
