Kunzea ‘Snowman’

I bought this tree at a Canberra bonsai show from the members sale table , can’t remember when . I was after the pot it was in . The pot was made by a local artist , Roger H and I had been after one of his pots for a while . The pot at the moment has a dying Callistemon in it .

so I am not going to show the pot .)
The tree was originally styled at a demonstration at a CBS show . It was a bit tall for me so I shrunk it bit . This year I put into a larger more shallower pot because it always sat to high in the pot over winter from excess root growth over summer . So that’s the background story . I am giving it a show because Kunzea have a reputation of not back budding and before I rub it off

I thought I would show it with a bud that has popped near the base .

Hi Sno,
That’s a nice tree mate.
But wow, I can’t tell whether I’m following in your footsteps or vice versa. This is another tree that I’ve been growing for a while now too. They are lovely and the bark is their feature point.
Next you’re going to tell me you’ve been growing a calothamnus.

A story where you buy a tree just to get the pot really resounds with me. Great story and good tree.

Thanks Keels . Roger has a very unique style which I haven’t seen any where else . I found they are hard to get so if you get one hang on to it .

Yes they bark up really well , almost to well . I have been pulling off the excess bark off this one every year which for me really shows off the different colour tones . I’ve seen an image of PeterH ‘s one from last years CBS Native Show where he stripped off all the bark which looked amazing as well .

Ah not yet

. I suspect it may be to cold for them here , I will have to look into it .

Lovely tree
It’s actualy from a lesson in stupidity . I have had a possum living in my work shed for a while and every now and then it organises a fight club session with its mates . They make a hell of a mess . The other day after a particularly wild night I had had enough . He was sleeping on a shelf in arms reach so I put some heavy leather gloves on and grabbed him by the tail . Lesson in stupidity .

Beaut tree Sno, and I love the bark! I am about to give up on Kunzea in my climate, they really struggle here. (Or maybe it's just the way I try to grow them...)
Is it called Snowman because it has white flowers?

Excellent tree, and a good match with the pot - might it go a little further to the left in the top photo? It's a great variety for bonsai - great bark, and compact growth, but it also takes on very nice angles as it grows, as you can see. I think we should be growing large numbers of them in the ground, to develop serious trunks.
Thanks for posting,
Gavin

It’s great marketing , someone must have the pvr on it . I hardly see the wild version K ericoides for sale , which has a sparser growth .
Most Kunzea that I have tried take to pot culture well , there maybe one that takes your humid conditions better .

Cheers Sno, I'll keep looking.
I have been given one that seems to do ok, but of course I have no idea what it is...
