A ponder-----has anyone noticed,or is there , a correlation between good autumn colour and the next season flowers? My wisteria (which has never flowered in 15 yrs)hasn't ever had very good colour -- but this autumn seems to be colouring up much more.

I hope it does mean something good - I have lovely yellow leaves on mine!!

Have a look at Bill Valvanis’ current edition of International Bonsai Online. It has 3 articles on Wisteria, including one largely dedicated to getting the bastards to flower.

Autumn color is related to conditions around the tree. Water and nutrients can contribute (and may also influence flowering) but cold nights and clear sunny days seem to be the most important factors and I doubt those can influence flowering as flower buds should already be initiated by late summer.

I don't have any direct comparison but I also thought my large wisteria had stronger yellows this season. I did shift it to a new location with more light this summer so that may have something to do with the better color but I can't pick up any sign of flower buds yet. We should be able to see the differences between flower buds and vegetative buds by the start of winter so I will have a closer look at both of mine and see what I can spot.
