Seedlings and seed 2021

As usual there are plenty of trident maple seedlings all through the garden beds.
Same arrangements as previous years:
Tridents:
small - up to 3mm trunk thickness. 50c each. Still reasonably flexible so suit bending or as smaller stems in group planting.
medium - approx 3-6mm thick. $1 each. Suit groups, fusion, thread through holes or just growing on.
large - 6-10mm (around pencil thick) $2 each. Suit fusion, growing on or groups.
extra large - 10mm + thick (around finger thick) $5 each. Limited numbers. Note that thicker is not always better or quicker for bonsai. These have little taper and will need to be chopped hard to make bonsai.

Group packs $20 - 3 large, 10 medium and 10 small tridents ready to arrange in a tray for your own forest.

Other uses for trident maple seedlings: root grafting - straight ones for thread grafting or L shaped trunks for approach grafting to roots. Tell me if you want these so I can pick out some that will suit your needs. Small and med sizes are better.

Trident maples:
Nowhere near as many of these as they are less hardy in the garden and slower to grow. $1 each and you get whatever size comes.

all seedlings are as they come out of the ground. Some have many roots, some have few. All orders sent bare rooted wrapped in damp paper in a plastic bag. These seedlings are fine packed like that for a week or more. Just refresh the moisture levels on arrival and they will be Ok for another couple of weeks if you don't have time to pot up straight away.

SEED: for those who want to do it all themselves I can supply fresh harvested trident maple and Japanese maple seed. Both germinate readily without need for all the fiddly stratification. JM seed is from a range of garden trees with differing characteristics which may or may not come through in the seedlings. Let me know if you want seed from trees with particular characteristics (red summer foliage, smaller leaf, dwarf, weeping, etc) or a mix for lucky dip.
$5 for 20 seed. $10 for 50 seeds

Please allow for delivery cost on all orders. Post charges vary according to size and weight. Seed; add $3 per order. Seedlings from $15. Express option available.

email neil@shibuibonsai.com.au to place an order.

Great to see the fresh seeds and whips are available again, thanks Neil. (I am trying to cut my numbers, but have mentioned your seed sale to a few on fb.)

A Typo in the original post has been pointed out

I highly recommend Neil's stock!!! Ordered 25 last year, been experimenting with ROR, groupings, super bendy individuals ... just re-potted most of them yesterday, all doing great!

I agree Legoman!
I have a bunch of Shibu's maple whips growing after a purchase 3 years ago. This is an excellent way to try new things for a super low cost! I have 2 forests and a range of other trials that I could never have done on such a small budget.

Thanks again Shibu!

Neil,

Can you give an estimate how many XL trident seedlings you have available?

Thanks

I thin k there's 10 XL and I also found some even thicker ones hiding in secluded corners so there's also 4 or 5 XXXL tridents.
I'll send some photos direct when I get time.

After my recommendation above, I convinced a bonsai hobbyist to place an order ... and that was me! Haha. The seedlings I have are going great, but wanted to try some of the larger stuff. Mine arrived last week and just potted them up over the weekend. Was initially thinking I'd put them into bonsai pots, but after seeking some wise advice, have opted for a mix of smaller to bigger grow pots for now ... see how they go, what grows where, etc.

Sounds like nozila is going to take the last of the big stuff?!

P.S Sorry for mixing up the line up, the XXXL is easy enough to track, the others switch places in the line up a bit.

Group packs have been going out to all over south east States so I'm almost out of large sized tridents.
Still a couple of group packs left but probably not for long.

Still plenty of small and medium trident seedlings.
Small only 50c each
Medium $1 each

These grow fast so even if you start with small ones now you can have 1cm thick trunks or better by this time next winter.

Get a bunch and try fusing some into larger trunks.
Plait some together for trunks with character.
Thread through holes in sheet metal to promote great nebari and trunk taper.
