Wagga Bonsai Society Show 2022 - The Photos

A gang of Goulburn Bonsai Society members went on a road trip yesterday to have a look at the Wagga exhibition and a good time we had. There is nothing like a bonsai road trip to get the thoughts racing and the conversation centered on bonsai.
Anyway you don't want a diatribe about how good the day was you just want the photos.
The trees were good if a little too close together but all those little things are put in the background when you concentrate on the trees.

The show is on again today so I don't know which tree won the peoples choice award (I hope someone will post a photo?) but there was one award yesterday (a special award but I can't remember the title) and it went to this very well presented small banksia.

Box elder Kirky. Not a species that you normally see as bonsai but this one was good.

Shibui Bonsai spent the weekend at Wagga so I can confirm the club did a great job of their show to recognise 40 years since the club formed. Happy birthday Wagga Wagga Bonsai society.
Leigh Tafe travelled down from Canberra to officially open the show on Saturday morning and give a talk promoting the NBPCA and what it does for bonsai in Australia.
He also had the job of picking a best in show and finally settled on the small Coast banksia - #40
People's choice was announced late this afternoon. Initially there were 2 trees with equal votes but a final vote saw the Box elder edge ahead and take that award from the juniper cascade #48
I agree that the box elder was a great tree. Lots of hollows and decayed wood in the trunk, Leaves remarkably small and it was also in prime autumn colour for the display.
Wagga club has a good number of newer members and it was great to see a range of trees from quite raw beginner trees through to some much older and well developed bonsai.

As it was the club's 40th anniversary the club tried to get as many trees from that era as possible.
Unfortunately not many of the original members have survived that long and neither have their trees but the current members managed to scrape together some trees close to that vintage even if they are not technically the best trees along with more contemporary bonsai and penjing.
