ficus standard to ficus sumo

hey people,

on my hunt for a ficus sumo today having no luck finding what i was after in a sense of a trunk that had been cut down and worked a bit i got this standard.
took a whole heap of cuttings and have done an "antonio chop" on it  i am undecided on which should be the front so instead of making one angled cut i made an offset v, just incase i wanted to change my mind and it would allow me to grow side branching too :D
i cleared off a couple of the roots that didnt look to great either and this is where it is at now, i would have to say give it another 2-3 weeks at most before i see buds popping all over the place.

now both fronts have possiblities but i think one has a bit more potential than the other, i will let you guys say what you think first before i let ya know what my thoughts on front chosen by nebari is :D

as it stands right now it is only about 6cm tall, at the base before the nebari it is about 5 cm across and the nebari spread is approx. 20cm at the widest points.

cheers.

I like number 2 as the front, looks more balanced and even to me

Hi Jamie
Irrespective of whichever front you choose, I am sure our southern cousin will pleased to hear that a particular chop has been named after him.
He deserves it, ‘cause he has amply showed that he is gutsy with good outcome.
(We have to be careful that he doesn’t get too flattered though… heaven help his customers in the morning )

Instead of a V-Cut, another possibility may be a simply slant cut (front to back). As you mentioned, you are going to get a heap of buds popping out (looks like a Benji), in which case you can afford to bend any of the shoots. The most important thing being to get some movement above the chop. Front, back, left and right.

Have fun mate.

Regards
Steve

cheers steve, yea i am pretty sure its a benji aswell, i can always take the offset V part off if necessary :D

and i think our southern cousin will not only be proud that a chop has been named after him but also the fact that its starting to get through to me that to introduce taper i need to do the cuts :D

as for his customers i think am just picturing the adam sandler movie ZOHAN ...........

cheers

Hey Jamie , sorry to be a party poo-per if that's an "Ficus Exotica" you are going to have trouble getting it to shoot .

If the leaf is has a wave look to it and isn't flat is an Exotica.

i havent even looked below the soil line as of yet to much, i know its pretty pot bound, but i am probly gonna hold off a bit untill it starts putting out growth before i take at least half or more of the rootball off then clean up all of the big ones, try and get a nice fine matt of feeder roots on it other than the nebari.

will keep ya posted when it pops and then with the rootball, i think its gonna be a mess so i will have to give myself plenty of time i reckon :D even thinking of taking more than that off but i want to develop the trunk first, then build some structure then the roots i thin, maybe not that order, but somewhere like that ;)

The trunk looks like Benji, but the leaf doesnt.

I wonder if it is the normal Hiilea or howeverit is spelt......I will go out and have a look at my wife's tree in a moment
