I have had this tree for a couple of years now, it has recovered from near death but I am unsure of what species it is.
It has foliage similar to an elm a little larger than chinese elm but smaller than english paler in colour and a little less glossy.
Any suggestions please

Gerard,

tell me, do the leaves hang on during autumn and winter?

If so, Fagus sylvatica or European beech

Looks like a zelkova serrate to me.

Both are possibilities. Bretts has some Hornbeams that also have similar foliage! so there is another in the mix

Do they colour up in Autumn and winter, and as BoNZai suggested do the brown leaves hang on until they get pushed of by new foliage?.

If you can answer these questions it will help in Identification.

Cheers ;) Pup

Thanks everyone, I am sure its not a fagus (I have several) when this tree was in the "not likely to survive corner" I had a wallnut tree there, I did not think this was the one, but I had no idea what a wallnut should look like so I wanted to rule this out.
With the replies you have given I am 95% convinced about it being a hornbeam.

Many thanks
Gerard

Hi Gerard,
Bark, leaves, branches and buds are telling me it's a Hornbeam, looks like Carpinus betulus - European hoenbeam.
