Shibui bare root seedling sale 2024

The garden has more trident seedlings again this winter so bare roots seedling sales are on again. Same price, same deals as last year. For those who are newer or have forgotten:
Trident maples seedlings as pulled out of the garden beds. Posted to you bare root but with roots wrapped in damp newspaper and a plastic bag. Trident seedlings have coped with up to 2 weeks in the post when packed this way but I now post express so delivery is usually 2-4 days depending on destination (and whether I get the address correct).
Please be aware that some will have plenty of roots and others will have few but they are tridents and will almost certainly grow despite having few roots.

All orders are subject to additional pack and post cost. Post cost depends on destination as well as size and weight of the box so please advise your address or postcode so I can calculate costs for each order. I try to pack as economically as possible to minimise post cost.
ballpark delivery costs: less than 50 small, add $15; up to 100 small, add $20; 1-2 forest packs, add $20

Apologies to WA, Tasmanian and international members. Due to strict quarantine restrictions we can only supply live trees and seed to Eastern States.
  • Small: trunks 3mm and less thick. $1 each. Anywhere from 10cm to 40 cm tall. Suited to grow on, bending and fusion projects, threading through metal plates, washers, etc to develop spreading nebari future bonsai or smallest trunks in beginning group planting.

  • Medium: trunks approx 3mm to 6mm thick. $2 each The trunks will be lopped at around 40cm to facilitate packing and post. Suit growing on to produce future bonsai, meduim trees in beginning groups, fusion projects, threading through metal plates, washers, etc,

  • Large: trunks approx 6mm (pencil thick) to 10 mm thick. $5 each. Trunks will be trimmed to around 40 cm to facilitate pack and post. Suit larger trunks in beginning group planting, grow on for future bonsai.

We also have limited numbers of tridents larger than 10mm. Prices reflect trunk thickness, trunk taper and how good the roots look for bonsai. $10- $40

  • Forest packs: $20. For those who want to start a trident group on a budget we can put together 1 large, 6 med and around 10 small tridents seedlings. All you need to do is trim the roots and arrange the trees in a container then grow them on for a few years to develop your very own trident bonsai forest.
It is worth discussing your plans with me when ordering. I can supply mostly straight trunks if that's what you need - eg group planting or trunks with some natural bends if you plan to bend and twist some. For approach grafting new roots I put aside seedlings with a bend close to the base of the trunk as that makes it easier to graft close to the base of your tree trunk while straighter trunks are easier to thread graft graft.

Also available:
Japanese maples seedlings. These are also mostly volunteer seedlings from the garden beds. In the past I've had limited numbers of JM seedlings but this year there seems to be plenty. They are slower to grow so prices a little higher than tridents.
  • small $2 each
  • medium $5 each
  • only a couple thicker than 6mm at $10 each.
  • Limited numbers of red bark Japanese maples $10 each

For those who would prefer to grow their own Shibui Bonsai can supply fresh seed of:
Trident maple, Japanese maple - 20 seeds $5; 50 seeds $10; 100 seeds $20
Japanese Black pine seed harvested from the tree planted in our paddock 2023 harvest $12 for 20 seeds; $20 for 50 seeds.

Spring seems to have arrived a bit earlier than past years. The trident seedlings are all opening leaves this week so I'm calling time on the bare root seedling sales for this year.

Same time next year - if I still have the energy to collect, pack and post.

My forest pack came within 24 hrs of postage, I’ve now planted it and all the buds have opened. Thanks again!

Ps when will your catalogues be updated I’d love to see what you’ve got on offer this season.

The new trees are potted up but now need time to settle in and grow some roots. It's usually the end of November before the tridents are stable enough to post. Catalogues are generally updated when I 'get around to it'. Usually some time in December but that depends how motivated I get. seems I can always find something else better to do than paste pictures into those files and post them online

Hi Shibui, are there going to be any XXL tridents available this summer? I can make the trip up to Yackandandah from Melbourne if so.

Any leftovers have been potted up or planted in the grow beds.
Potted trees are obviously available in summer but will be priced for the time, work and expense of potting them and keeping them in the nursery.
Trees that are planted in the grow beds are not available through summer. Summer transplant would probably kill them so they are not available until next winter.
I do have new trident trunks that were dug from the grow beds and potted up ready for sale later in the year.

It all depends what standard, size and shape tree you want and how much you want to spend.

Tridents now have leaves well open so it's well past time when I can safely send trees bare root. are root deciduous trees are only available when they have no leaves - which means July, August and sometimes as late as September.
We still have lots of potted trees which can be posted year round but prices are higher than bare root seedlings because of the extra time, effort and cost involved.
If you want cheap bare root you will need to develop patience and wait until next winter.
