I airlayed a nursey crabapple. A 1cm width ring was done with rooting hormone applied and when I check 4 weeks later, heaps of short new roots. 7 weeks later, the bark...heals and regrown completely
I did another ring below the old ring, applied rooting hormone and another 4 weeks pass. The new ring healed.
I just did the third ring and this time, no rooting hormone. Hope that it will take this time.

Id think it is more likely that your ring bark was not wide enough I usually do at least 25mm

and you have to be very careful to make sure you remove all the cambium layer underneath. Just the smallest bit and it reconnects.

i agree with hartos there, the ring bark taken of should as a general rule of thumb be 1 and a half times the tickness of the trunk, generally i go 2 times the thickness, which generally ends up being 25mm or more, so theres that covered, the other thing is i think you probably should of left the layer on longer than 4 weeks, i think that even though some of it healed over it looks like new root stubs were growing and these would keep growing if left long enough.

Sometimes this happens. When doing an aerial layer, Make sure the distance between the 2 cuts is far enough apart, i make it 4 to 1. so if the layering branch is 1cm thick i would make my 2 cuts 4cm apart. some can even be 6 to 1 depending if they strike easily. Also you must remove all the cambiun layer, this also causes fusing if you miss some. good luck.
