Hi all!!
Complete newbie to the bonsai world here!
I was gifted this tree for my birthday but no indication what type of tree this is - my sister only recalls the guy at the nursery telling her it’s a maple.. but if anyone can help me out with something more specific that would be great so that I can adequately care for it!
apologies I’ve had to crop the photo to be able to attach it :)
Thank you in advance!!

Looks like a Field Maple - Acer Campestre. Challenge is to keep internodes short and stop branches being too straight. Walter Pall has some good ones. http://walter-pall-bonsai.blogspot.com/ ... ple-1.html

So new to bonsai you haven't given any location so we don't know what part of the world you live. Different species are more or less common in different parts of the world so that info will help with guesses on species.

Leaves are opposite so Maple fits.
There are 2 species with similar leaves that are occasionally used as bonsai here in Australia.
Acer campestris has already been mentioned.
Acer ginnala is another one with similar leaf shape that I've seen occasionally.

In the USA there are more species that have similar leaves but much less common down here.
