hey people, while at the beach today taking the kids for a swim, i stumbled across a nice patch of figs QLD smal leaf if i am not mistaken.
i think this one might interest shannon and others
i spotted it and gave it a rock as it was growing in sand, it moved a little i thought to my self....hmmmmmmmm.
looked in the boot, i found my pruning saw, and as i thought made a square around the tree, it went through with ease
gave it a rock and out it popped to easy, and i will be going back for sure. one at a time i reckon. i spotted a great one there aswell but people were sitting right in front of it bugger (i will get it )

heres a couple of pics, pruned the roots back, quite hard, it has a fair few feeders, and got rid of crossing roots, there is one big one but that has fused into the trunk. this is gonna make a sensational twin or maybe something else. will see how it back buds once i see some new growth and chop it back!

i have alo had to do a couple of flat bottom chops just to get the roots going horizontal it will shoot out all over the place with new roots.
its gone into a grow box with my diatomite, bonsai mix, way better than the sandy crap it was in!

i should see some results in the not to distant future!

oh size,

trunk base above nebari, 4 inches, nebari spread 8 inches. height not that it matters at the moment cause it will be coming down a lot! 3 foot.
i have plans on shohin size for this one and i will be able to induce taper quite will as there is a lot of airial roots coming of the trunks, wheter it stays as one trunk or two, not sure yet
i will continue to use this thread on all the figs i find and updates on them all

Hey Jamie, I was down your way for a weekend a couple of months ago. Stayed on the strand. went for a walk down to the beach, had a look and was on my way back to the road when I noticed one of the cassaurinas had a sumo fig about 12 ft up growing on the bark. Looked to be three inches wide at the base and 4 inches high. could not figure how to get it down, and now I cant remember what number beach access it was.

now your gonna have me looking up in casuarinas BB ! do you remember which road it was? i will be hunting that down something fierce! if you could tell me what part of hervey bay it was i will find it for sure
get back to me on that one BB you got me keen now, even if it is that high, it woulld of been from a bird poo with fig seed in it! damn now ya got me excited!

Will someone please tell me what a sumo fig is? I keep reading about them on this forum, but no one will tell me. Tried to google it but it keeps coming back here.

glenda, a sumo fig or more to the point sumo style is where the tree has extreme taper from the nebari and base which is generally as wide if not wider than the height of the tree. here is an example

Good on you mate!! Looks like a QSL fig to me.
Give it a hard prune back and flat bottom, water with Auxinone and Seasol.....
Then stand back and watch it go

agreed on the QSL mate and theres a fair few more so when ya coming up????

its been flat bottomed, i couldnt get auxinone so i got super thrive, should do the same and seasol has been done aswell

and i am hoping for it to boom in no time, i will be going back for more, for sure, you should see this set of airial roots coming of it, they have naturally weaved together themselves, i am gonna be cutting that off for sure i couldnt get a pic as i didnt have my phone will have to wait for that one, strange thing was i couldnt pic out any clero? i am sure they are there though, i probably need your experienced eye shan hint hint

I have got plenty of figs at my finger tips as you know mate hehehe .... Flat out with work at the moment barely got time for my own tree's but hope to get up there one day soon, will help you out as much as i can in the forum
