Hi, I collected this stump 5 months ago. It didn't shoot up until recently and I thought that it was dead (when I found it on the side of the road, it was almost dried up with very litte pale green left on the cambium). I have asked for ID but noone knew as there wasn't any leave. Now with new set of leaves, I hope that someone could help identify it. It is sort of woody vine. The bark is rough and the base is just over 100mm in diameter. The leaves are thick and shinny. I am thinking of losing a few branches here.

im not sure on the tree mate, can you give us some info? does it give of a scent when the leaves are crushed? does sap flow when cut?

a close up would help of the leaves will help!

scent is not particular. Sap flow strong when cut. Some people said that they've seen these with jasmine-like while flowers. Pic 3 is the closest up I could take with my mobile phone (My cam got stolen with other stuffs). It takes forever to bud mate but you're right. We need to see more of secondary branching to decide.

cool mate, i understand that we can work on overall trunkline with what ya got though, i see three to four possibilties there mate i will try get some virts done this week for ya

yea mate, i am having trouble sleeping so no probs. it can help to take my mind off things. i will have a ponder and see what i come up with and i am a bit of a night owl anyways!

these are just trunk line possibilities. not sure on the tree how it backbuds on old wood etc untill we get a ID on it

they are a bit rough, obvious lines of possiblities havent added taper or foliage etc.
this option is using the middle trunk and i would use the new growth as leaders!
i had to throw a sumo option in there it could be quite possible depending on how it back buds and such, i know you said it took a while to come back but that could of bee due to the shock of the digging. it also depends on how it reduces in leaf size. there is a bunch of possibilties for this tree, i havent even tried turning or twisting different angles, i think if it starts going great guns you wont have any probs!

I wouldn't hack it too much just yet
if it was rescued as almost dead ...it may not have much stored energy inside

besides a few more weeks like this weather will allow it to make good progress

have you given it fert/superthrive/and seasol?

I'd agree with Gollum, let it recover until growth is stronger before any more chopping, but a good time to be thinking about your options. Lillypilly sounds possible, I thought of a few others, but it didnt really fit those.
Jamie, my husband has joined ya on sick parade, strained a tendon in his arm, so he is on light duties for a few weeks, doc reckons he was lucky not to have torn it thru completely. Just when we have a birthday slippery dip to assemble, and sheep to be slaughtered for the birthday party too, sigh, looks like son takes over the heavy work for now.

i did say to let it grow out strong first!

and yes it sucks being on that parade, and the uncanny thing is, when i had my fall it was on my daughters first birthday too...

Thanks for showing the possibilities jamie. And for your suggestions people, I'll wait for some more recovery before the major chop. And I hope that those guys on that parade recover soon too. They are too valuable to be away from work

This looks very much like a Metrosideros, or New Zealand Xmas Bush (Pohutukawa in NZ )
I have 2 kinds 1 has a shiny thick leaf like yours and 1 has greyish slightly furry leaves.
The green one is very vigorous and puts out aerial roots like a fig.
It gets a red bottle brush like flower,but mine have never flowered as a bonsai.
I find they are better a a larger bonsai as the internodes are fairly long when they have a growth spurt and with the leaves in opposite pairs they are hard to control.
There is also a dwarf form that I have, that puts out lots of aerial roots.
This only a guess from what I can see in the pics, google metrosideros and see what you think.
