Does anybody know where i can find a makita die grinder in sydney?

I bought mine from total tools in Brookvale, i also bought an Arbortech as well online.

you should be able to find one at any tool store, are you after the large die grinder with a 1.4 inch collet or a smaller one like dremel with the 3.2 collet?

the larger one is good for router bits and large trees. the dremel tools are great for fine detail and with the right bit you can take a lot of wood out without any hassle. especially like the rotary bit Kvan has. that hing chews out wood big time!

Take note of the RPM when buying a die grinder. Many of the Bonsai tools are mid range revs 1500 I think is fairly normal. If you can afford it the variable speed die grinder is a must. Search the Forum Grant bought a cheap one that is fixed revs but just scrapes in with the higher rev tools if money is an issue.

Very few "Hardware Store" Tool shops carry Die Grinders (and not all Makita shops either), but they will all order in for you. Buy the biggest one you can afford!!! Oh yea and haggle on the price. They are a 'specialist' tool (hence the reason shops dont carry them) and prices are veriable on them.

I could be wrong but I think you meant a Makita Straight Die Grinder with a 1.4" collet, you can get them from Sydneytools in Smithfield not far from where you live. I bought a low range (non-variable speed adjustment) there about 6 months ago, it lists on there website for $129.00 when I got there they tried to charge me $150.00 I pissed off and told them it shows only $129.00 on their website so I end up paying only $125.00. If I was you I would not bother thinking of get a 3.2" collet one as these are useless if you going to do serious wood carving, this little one is only good for minor carving or polishing, nail artists using them.

The only draw back is that you won't find 1/4" shaft wood carving bits anywhere around Sydney (probably in Aus). I've been searching at a largest woodwork shop, Carba-Tec in Auburn (also not far from your location) they don’t have any. I used mine with 1/4" shaft router bits, just managed to get one or two carving jobs done, with extreme caution and very steady hands. Using the rounder bit on the grinder is dangerous, too much grabbing and kicking back unexpectedly. I am saving up to order the probable bit from overseas as it costs as much or more than mine grinder and probably will order from Kaizen Bonsai in UK. I read a post sometime ago in this forum and a member called anttal63, he purchased his from Kaizen and pleased with what he paid for.

Carba-Tec is offering a Arbortech® Mini Grinder for $275, this tool is not suitable if your trees with very confined space, OIMO.

I have been using Router bits in a trimmer router(30 000 revs) for a few years now and it works pretty good. Yes there is a bit of kicking and grabbing. There is even a bit of swearing when it grabs and runs where I really didn't want it too but I have never feared for my safety.
Compared to the wood saw in a 4" grinder that I started with that really grabs and I kept on imagining it stuck in my gut one day so I am glad I gave that the fick.
One note about the 1/4 inch tools is that tools such as the samurai are a 6mm shaft and is too small for the 1/4" 6.35mm collet that is standard with most die grinders sold here. Makita and a couple of others do sell a 6mm collet that can be used with their die grinders. It is possible to shim the shaft (even with paper) but with tools as nasty as the samurai that may not be a great idea.

shimming any sort of rotary tool is not a good idea! the speed they run at even if it is variable and low at 5000rpm say it is fast enough to do damage. if a spinning tool runs of centre due to shimming you can not only harm yourself, but the tool the tree working on and posible other things, this comes from near ten years from working in a metal shop and when things like this happen it is scary, i promise you that!

i would be hunting down the 6 mm collet for 6mm bits or the 1/4 inch collet for 1/4 inch bits. NOT mix and match.

if you have to pay that mit more for it please dont be tight, i know money can be an issue, god do i know that, but when it comes to machinery and tools that spin up to 30,000 RPM i would want the right bits for it.

Yes i have been looking at the Arbortech ones and i was talking to Ray Nesci yesterday and he also uses that for his trees

i do have a dremel but for large carving jobs the bits seem to wear out too quick

i also research at kaizen bonsai and damn its expensive hahha the terrier bit is like 100 plus hhahhah well bonsais arent cheap i guess its better to save up for the the kaizen bonsai one
