Here in the Central Highlands we have an extinct volcano that has littered our area with this wonderful rock that is light and really easy to carve out and makes an unusual display for Bonsai. It retains moisture also so the tree really thrives in its environment. The tree is a Mugo, and , yes, it has a long way to go but that will also happen. Doesnt it make a great pot though.

Great pot, Bodhidharma. Much more 'natural' than traditional bonsai pots.

Nice one Bodhi, I love it. What did you use to carve it out
I have some sandstone which I have been attacking with a chisel-type tool and making slow progress, just a bit worried about drilling some holes in the sandstone as it is liable to crack Will have to keep it wet I suppose..

It was really easy Bonscythe. I used an angle grinder with a masonry wheel, started cutting into the top and slowly worked my way in. The stone is soft and the whole job only took me ten minutes

if that rock is naturally absorbant and is crushable you would and easily accessed to a fair amount of it you would probably have a good supply that could possibly be used in your potting medium?

Most definitely could Jamie, but i have access to 3-5mm Scoria which i buy for $45 per square metre. It is even washed so i just add it to my mix at a 2-1 ratio

Hey good idea Bodhi. wasnt that long ago i was looking to carve out some sandstone and do the same with. Looks so natural, beats the same old,same old.
