I have had this tree for the past year. I got it in a sad state. Since getting it, I have worked on getting more growth and getting some sort of branching.
I have my chosen front, but I now need to get an apex, something that has been bothering me for awhile now.

I look at it, but cant figure out what to keep, what to wire and what to remove.

Any thoughts?

The bottom one. It has the little tag in front.
I need the cut wound to heal up. Its on the way, its why the growth is there atm.

it will be a literati, and from talking to people about it, it should be a nice one.

I just need to get an apex. Something I don't know much on...

Asus I have said in the past and I will no doubt say in the future, do not think APEX, think Crown, apex has the connotation of top and in some cases point .
So with that in mind we seem to struggle with the concept. So in a crown we see more of a round dome like mine!! mature. So that is what you create wire the branches and the move them into position. I hope this helps you along the devine path to enlightenment Asus  :P get seriuos with the CROWN

i tend to agree to some point pup,

and i think the top of the tree can be referred to as the apex.

but... the CANOPY (in my mind) is like your crown, i think.

if the canopy is lower than the top of the tree, ie a kink in the trunk at the top of a cascade, then the trunk is the apex.

all the apex is to me, is the closest visual point to the sky.
the canopy may be the apex, it may not...

:D

Ben I think this is Melaleuca Styphelioides which is water hungry as you said in a chat room. This is the species that the US used to drain the everglades and it proved to be a pest in that country. It is prone to attracting a certain type of wasp which can make it lose it's bark. It can have nice white flowers around February if not cut back. It also re-shoots easily on the trunk which gives new branches in a short time. This to me is a rewarding species for bonsai. Enjoy.

Pup old friend, I have wire on the main top branches now. i havn't moved any of the branches though, as I was going to fine wire the remaining.
Ill post some pictures tomorrow if possible, as i don't think I did too bad on the wire for my third attempt.
