When and where to collect Hawthorne?

Hi Folks,
As the heading suggests, I'm interested in collecting Hawthorne (or probably anything else for that matter) and I'm wondering where in vic ( not too far out from Melb is a good place to find them).

I think I've heard that Lancefield is good but not sure. Was planning to head out there at some time so then was thinking, if so when is the best time? I assume it would be the same as repotting time - late winter/early spring but are there other times that would work like around now, give or take amonth?

cheers

I lifted some a couple of weeks ago, I'd regard it as out of season but thought I'd give it a go anyway, hardly got any roots with them but they're absolutely booming anyway, buds everywhere.
Can't help with a collecting spot in your neck of the woods though, unless you head out to Bright, seen a heap out that way a few years back when I was on hols.

As an avid hawthorne collector, I would strongly suggest late August. It is my experience that they will shoot and perform "normally" if dug out of season, but they will suffer some significant set backs later on. If you stick with the best times, you get the best results. JMHO.

New branches dry and die. The second year is the real test.

Oh, ozzy, now you got months to worry.
Oh, well, theres heaps around the Littlehampton area, I know a nice back road too, closed off and slowly getting overgrown by various trees...
Going for a trip there in spring!

It wasn't my intent to make him worry, it is just that fore warned is fore armed. The process planned for working on the collected beauties may now be defered just a little, and that will benefit the tree.

mate, i'm looking at digging up a few of my own. You will see them everywhere from south of Pakenham/ Nar Nar Goon areas, right out through Gippsland.
I travel a lot through these areas for work, and do you think i ever remember to pack a shovel and saw in the Ute?

I'm actually heading up that way soon, going past Bairnsdale. Once your in the area then what? I assume you can't just pull over on the princess HWY and start digging!
I assume I'll need to find some sort of park land etc... Any tips?

I don't think I'll be able to do any digging on this trip unfortunetly. I'll at least try and suss out some locations.

good idea mate, if ya can sus some spots out it woldnt hurt to take a saw with ya and chop them down low if ya find good ones then go back in spring and dig em up, they will have some good strong low growth that some of it will be usable :D

i wish i could get hawthorn up here to grow, or even dig some, not around though, fair few celtis though ;)
