Can someone try to ID this, there is a big bush/tree across the road from me where a house has been demolished.
It has a lovely big trunk on it, thinking of digging it up if it has potential.

Guessing its a Grewia. Yes I have seen them used as Bonsai, search them on this site there were pics. Not one of the all time greats, but useable and very tough guys, tend to be a bit too vigorous if anything.

Greth is right, there are a few the most common one is the African one. It is classified a weed. The Australian one is from Queensland and the Northern Territory is more compact. With work and perseverance they do make nice Bonsai.
If it is the African one do not let it go to seed, cut the flowers off as they finish.
Grewia occidentalis is the African one. The leaves of this one are elm shaped, which looks like yours.
The two Australian one's are Grewia retusifolia and G,latifolia. The leaves on latifolia are broadly oval and heart shaped. The leaves on retusifolia are alternate and oblong to spoon shape. Flowers are very similar the Australian ones are more Pink.

Cheers :) Pup

You have to be on to them constantly. Fast growers, tend to grow straight and watch branch joins... they can thicken too much too fast. But all that aside, nicely cultivated ones with curves and well developed foliage are stunning when in flower. Definitely worth bonsaiing.

Their common name is 'Lavender Star'.

Well I will be off in the morning to have a better look at it. If it's any good I will have a fun morning digging, atleast it hs been raining so the ground shouldn't be too hard.
