Here is an olive that I got recently from SA. It was a bare stump when I got just before Christmas. I let it grow freely till today and decided that I needed to get the basics sorted so I stop wasting the trees energy. There is some carving to do as you will see but that will be left for late in the year. Or next year. Let me know whatyou think and I would love to see some virts of it (looking at you Jamie)

Haven't thought about pot yet mate. Bit early for that in my mind. Prob rectangle unglazed.

Probably would have been good if you could have cut the base straight across at the widest point, roots would have fired out all around the cut and you would end up with something like this ...


As it is its too rounded at the base, at least build up the soil and hide that reverse taper.

Thanks Ozzy, I plan on either flat bottoming it or layering it at the widest point.

hey mate, bit rough but its an idea, it seems that this is gonna follow a japanese pine style look to it, unless we start getting way out of the square and you do some ground growing.
as for the root sytem i think a ground layer will work quite well, it will just be a bit scary being such a big piece of stock and not wanting to lose it plus waiting for a year or more before working on it again.

Maybe try flaring it out in places with wedges and ground level hormones, shouldn't set the tree back much at all, its pretty active and healthy.

Hi Jarrod, nice lump of wood Was that one of Tom's olives that he dug while over in SA? I have a few shohin sized trees from him from one of his "expeditions".

I was thinking that since you have a greenhouse, the chop down and grow a new nebari option may suit your situation. By adding humidity to your house without being overly wet, by allowing good ventilation and using a good rooting medium you could make an awesome tree from that trunk. Worth consideration, it would be a high reward for the risk in my opinion.

Could you should bring the tree with you to the meeting on Tuesday night? I'd love a closer look.

Hi Jarrod,
I reckon you need to shorten it a bit more the top section has very little taper and needs it. The tree has a beautiful taper and that should continue smoothly all the way up. I would heal the scars rather than carve shari into it as with a powerful base like that it has the feel of a tree fed on milk and honey rather than one from a harsh enviroment. In years to come you will have something really special with this tree.

Yeah I agree that it should be a bit shorter. We will see what comes of it. I will be layering it next spring. Was just going to flat bottom it but I thought this guy was a bit to nice to lose.

I will carve it to begin with and if it doesn't look "right" I will let it heal.

you probably know already jarrod but olive a notorious for being solow to roll over, that is why they are carved so often as the scars take a lifetime to roll in.

and it will be carved in the back of the tree so it won't be easily seen. We will see what I feel like doing
