Style my trees

Hi, I've just done up some quick virts of a little bougy and a tanuki juniper. Can you have a look and tell me what you think? Some are pretty ordinary, some I think have some potential.
Change them if you want.

It was a good excersize to start learning photoshop, and to try to train myself how to style trees.

i like option #1 for the bougey,, and either options #1 or #3 for the juniper, although #3 is my favourite out of those two. they have a rugged, clinging-to-life look about them that appeals to me. can we please have a look at the original trees? great virts by the way

Here is the boug, it will require a bit of a chop to get it to look like virt , or I could leave it with a top on.

Don't have a tree yet for the juniper, just the driftwood, depends on what I decide to do with it, then I'll go hunting for a little one to wrap around it.

Took me awhile to get the hang of photoshop, but I'm starting to work it out

that boug has some nice structure too i would be looking at the semi cascade option but not so high in the pad and not so much of a gap, more like nearly one big canopy but sort of defined into a branch pad

as for the juni depending on the size of the drift wood i would be looking for a shimpaku as they have great foliage for tight padding, not many other juni comare to them

Which pic were you referring to with the boug.

Which juniper virt do you like the most.

They will both be on the larger side of shohin, so simpaku would be perfect.

im trying to convert the bmp image to jpg now so i can edit and post it again, i will do what i am thinking for ya, and i reckon virt 1 of the juni will be good

That looks nice Jamie, Yeah I like both of them aswell, not sure which way to go yet.

Got any ideas on any of the juniper virts?

Jamie's semi-cascade looks good. I agree with him that your semi cascade was just a bit too open.
The full cascade looks great, however it will take much, much longer to acheive. Bougs typically grow slowly in pots. I think the semi cascade is the most achievable and probably pleasing option IMHO
And I quite like option 1 for the juniper. Agreed also that shimpaku will be a good choice. I see you're in Brisbane, Tess @ Bonsai Northside had a good selection of shimpaku in various sizes when I was there last (which was over a month ago now , I'm over due for a visit!!)

Nathan, I think I like the full cascade more but the semi cascade will be achievable a lot quicker and I can pretty much use the branches as they are.

I was out a Tess's last week picked up a procumbens that I'm ground growing for awhile, there wasn't too many shimpaku's on display, I'll probably go and have a look at
Steve's stock out on the southside, I'm pretty sure that there was a heap of shimpaku out there, do you think squamata would look ok?

squamata will work fine if the tree is a bit larger in design, about 30-60cm smaller sized trees with squamata look a bit of when they get there mature foliage as it has rather large mature foliage compared to shimpaku that stays rather tight and is better for shohin or mame trees

i like number 1 for the tanuki design

thinking more is a good thing mate, if you take your time with the tree a much better image will be awarded

i love these trees i wish they were mine and although they arent tanuki you can still make trees as good as that with tanuki techniques

here is a bit of a different alternative fore the tanuki, i used the first pic it seemed like a step ladder with the foliage mass to the right and with the deadwood there it doesnt seem righ, maybe a smaller back branch to create depth would work but that is way down the track.

The mini shimps are fantastic!I love the top one and the pot it's in is beautful!!
The squamatas have nice juvenile foliage, very tight and compact, but shimps mature foliage is definately the way to go!
