I use a thong called a creanmate. It rubs everything off the tool. Then a quick spray with WD 40
or RP7 and let it dry a little and wipe the rest off. Then put the tool away.

this is a qoute from Rod, posted on a different site about how to clean tools.
soak them in hot water with a cleaning product called ZEST this removes any sap and dirt. I then rub them over with steel wool, then I sharpen them as normal. I find with regular use the black finish comes off them. A great product to restore the black finish is a liquid gun blue it is also available in a cream I prefer the cream.
this works a treat

Mix of methylated spirits and water 50=50in a bottle hic

and a crean mate available at all good bonsai stores. I use this to dip the blades of scissors as I use them and rub all other tools with it then wd 40. Clean your tools after each use and you should not get the build up or the rust.
Cheers
