Vines can be used for Bonsai no problem, if you are prepared to trim and trim and....you get it. The ones here display stunning Autumn colour with the Boston Ivy turning brilliant red And the ornamental Grape reds through to orange and yellow. The foliage size comes down on the Ivy (if you keep at it ) . The Boston Ivy in the Blue pot is tiny about 145mm in length. The grape is large and old and a work in progress and i dont know its next move yet.

G,day Bohdi I will be taking my sectures with me, when I take pup for his walk tomorrow there is a boston ivy hanging over the wall in the park.

I had Ivy but was offered to much to say no. I can always get some more, but that means more plants and I have all these Hokkeido ( nire geyaki ) cuttings to put down.

Ah well here we go again. Cheers :) Pup

nice work bodhi :D using species that are a bit different is a good challange and allows for breaking new ground :D keep it up!

that first little boston ivy mate, have you thought about a pot change, i think the full cascade pot is a little heavy personally, i think a nice little hexagon or octagon with a bit of depth but not to tall, maybe half the height of the one its in now, would look great i think :D
being a semi cascade i think a different pot could give it that little extra :D

just a thought mate :D

jamie :D

I've always loved the Google pics of Boston Ivy so when I saw a young plant (ten leaf sets on a single stem) at the local hardware store for $3 I bought it.

I was reading up on the plant today and was a bit disappointed to read that all parts of the plant are poisonous and pets and children should be kept away from it. With 3 dogs, one of which is still a pup in the curious/chewing stage, I think maybe I should keep it (the plant!) out of the backyard.

nice colour Bodhi :tu: the Bostons are beautiful this time of year!

Have you ever tried Hedera helix as bonsai, I dug up a big'n a while back and its now healthy enough to start styling :fc: just gotta decide on a direction now ;) just a shame they don't have colour like the Boston, evergreen though, so more of a growing season. Any tips for vine bonsai?

Cheers, Ryan

Lots and lots of patience  You have to prune consistently or you end up with thin straggly branches. Clip and grow is the order of the day  Helix "golden heart" make nice bonsai.
