G`day guys this is a series on a elm that I grew from cutting about 17 yrs ago. It was growing very well until the Christmas beetle grubs decided to have a feed, most of the bark fell off and a lot of foliage. always a sad day. It did shoot after getting rid of the grubs, and with what was left I am attempting to create a tree that has been damaged and fallen over exposing it`s roots. I had two main shoots to use so I have to spread them around a bit. The first pic was taken in September 08, the last pic I think was December last year. Since the last pic was taken I have refined the carving a little more and done more wiring, I think a more shallow pot would suit. In the virt I am trying to give an idea of were I am heading with this more unusual elm, feel free to comment .

Nice recovery. Can I ask what you used to get rid of the grub. I've had some problems with those guys also.

as per usual mate, nothing but fantastic! im loving where this tree is goig and how you have used a problem issue as a feature!

i reckon you will be able to acheive yout virt and this one will end up winning an award in a couple of years
the tree is very dramatic!

G`day guys thanks for your comments I feel the virt is definitely achieveable , the branches are all in the right places . It just needs to thicken and I will refine the dead wood more, it`s well on the way. Steve I physically removed them and treated it after repotting with lorsban ( spraying foliage , branches and drenching the soil ). I am of the opinion there is a bonsai in most trees, though sometimes it can be hard to find. Cheers Rod.......

Ant lorsban is a systemic insecticide and I also use it to kill ants and worms in pots, I don't go heavy handed on the mix though. Mate I have never had any problems using it on my elms, I have lost 2 large elms to the grubs so I show no mercy. I find once they start getting into them they can do some damage. CHEERS ROD....

You have hit the nail on the head mel I have a few of these elms, and some will end up looking the same. When this happened it made me think outside the square, and sometimes doing that creates great trees. Hugh thanks for your comments. CHEERS ROD
