Just taken the dogs out for there daily run/swim & finally dug this eucy i have had my eyes on for about 6mths. The whole area is set to be bulldozed for development so i have no qualms about saving some of the trees.
Its approx 11cm wide & 9cm high. This is just the lignotuber, all roots & trunks have been cut off as i have found this method works for me. As you can see from the second pic, it has been planted with all but about 1/2inch buried. It should reshoot in approx 4-6wks & be ready for its first repot in about 4mths time, when the bulk of the lignotuber will be exposed and most of the growth cut off again. The second reshoot should leave it looking something like this and ready for its first styling, approx 6-8mths time.

Its def not lemon scented gum as i have one of these thats been ground grown from a seedling. Thinks its spotted gum but am not real good at identifying varieties... I just hack & grow

Just to update, inspected this baby during morning watering. The first buds are starting to appear, budding happens quickly along with the first pair of leaves, then it slows down while building roots. Will take some more pics when it is up enough to see.

The earliest were at a time before i really knew what i was doing & they never made it. One of my very first bonsai was a eucy, thats how much i love them. Had some success about 10yrs ago but lost them all during a heatwave on the wimmera about 5yrs ago. I am hoping it will go ahead alot quicker now i have a permanent home & town water (its a bitch carting drums 300mtrs uphill from a dam). The oldest i have now is 18mths from diggin, I cut it right back & repotted only the other day. Its taken the best part of 20yrs on & off experimenting with them to get to this stage.

This one was dug last september, 1st repot was in november & first style cut was in january at the club meet. Theres about another inch still buried to keep the roots from overheating & drying. Its coming along nicely, am aiming for the look of a big old red gum like I used to see on the wimmera. Massive bulbous trunks with branching off in every direction, similar to a broom style.
They really love their water and I have started feeding them heavy (they love it), from past experiences they take alot to thicken up the branchs so i just have to be patient (something bonsai teaches in spades).

That would be my guess, but its only a guess. I am good at growing plants but not the best at remembering what they are or identifying them.

Really must start to keep a bonsai diary so i can keep track of them & whats been done & when. Any advice on how to do this, what software to use etc?

What do you feed them? Do you feed all Eucalypts the same?

I feed the same as all my bonsai, dynamic lifter in a granule form rather than the pellets (it is another brand but same composition). I feed about every 2wks with a lay off from mid december to end of jan and ease that out to about every 4 weeks over winter. I also hit them with seasol on the off week from the dynamic lifter. Natives dont really have a winter dormancy so i just feed right thru.

Thats what forums like this are all about. At the same time that your showing and sharing your progress on your trees, you are actually tracking them too. I have all faith in Steven being in this for the long hawl, unlike one other guy who dropped the lot not to be seen or heard again. but thats another story.

Just a note on working with Eucs this time of the year. Be aware of your own micro climate. In my climate I would be careful of the new growth ( upper and lower ) being affected by sub zero conditions as we go into winter.
