hi guys

while away i got the chance to vist Australian bonsai grower (not for as long as i would like or with as much money either) i got this nicly trunked buxus, it has some flaw with the fact there is practically no nebari (i know this is gonna get used in another thread ) but to find a buxus with such a trunk is generally rare in my area. it has some nice trunk movement so i am thinking informal upright, the very low thick branch i was thinking about keeping it in the design but i dont think it will work and it will have to be used as the sacrifice it was intended for, it is getting time to take it off though. its getting to fat for the size of the tree to how it will scar, even though these get really corky bark and will probably heal well it they are slow growers.

i havent done much with it yet apart from get it home and water it but i will probably be doing some work on it this arvo

looks like its got a nice basel flare. Branches build quick on these species and they back bud well as you know. the sacrifice will have to go if your happy with the thickness of the trunk. are you going to reduce the top somewhat say 1/3

hey mate, yea i am pretty happy with the thickness for tree size, it is 65mm across at the widest point, for a tree thats only about 200mm tall its a good size, but it will come down some more to where i can work with it for a canopy

the one thing with these guys even though branches can be built, as soon as there roots are confined, bam, very slow, so i will be developing the tree in the nursery pot and then reducing the rootball gradually as to not lose any branches or vigour

well, i got to style this and get it in a training box (no point to get that pic it is just a cut down styro) but here it is after the first style, definately needs some time now, taking the big branch of has made the image of the trunk slightly smaller but was definately necessary. it has give the tree a smoth flow and feminine sort of look, it will stay in the larger trainer until it fils out and gets a few go overs as when these are in pots they are notoriously slow and the other thing i have found is they dont like heaps of root disturbance, so this one only had about a 1/3 of the roots removed, which allowed it to fit in the training box.
i am not happy with the apex either, but once cut down there was little to work with, so i worked with what i had and it will grow out in time. a little bit of a scrape away of soil also showed a root spread but right now i dont think i want to show it

Nice tree Jamie under your watchful eye it will be a cracker .I had one of these guys once but too much sun and not enough water = bad combo ,would like to have another try ,how would the roots on these go in diatomite ,i am thinking with the humidity of the mix that could be a bonus.

cheers mate yeah it is in a diatomite, seedling medium mix right now, the roots would lovve it as the are a tree that send out alot of fine feeders. they take a long time to create surface roots and thicken too so diatomite is the way to go

ok little update it was pushing stronger than i first thought, so it has gone into a pot now, there was no need to remove and of the roots as it had a root prune not long ago.
i think it needs to be moved in the pot some arounf clockwise just a little to show more movement which is actually in the trunk.

I agree with you Jamie, what appears to be reverse taper shows at this angle ( not that there is ) also it does not show off the Nebari to its best potential.

I can find space for it if you like and work it for a bit. Then when I am tired of it or dead the missus will send it back

i think we could work something out, i will hang on to it for a while though i did make an error about the size of the tree in an earlier post, its actually about 300mm tall not 200mm.

an i will have a play with it and see if i can get it in the pot better. to show movement and better nebari

its definately a work in progress, i havent had a chance to rotate it around a bit yet it has a lot more movement as you can see in other angles.

i can actually see a lot smaller tree in this but am liking it to much to to take it down

Nice progression there Jamie, i should get my shari together and get into mine now .I picked up 6 damaged trees in 300mm pots for $25 just couldn't resist them .They are a Buxus but not sure which one i have .Cheers

thanks alpine if they have a realy corky bark then they would be harlandii like this one, other wise they will have a rough bark but not corky and be one of the other cultivars

i have actually got it sitting in the pot right, now will get pics soon

well i got a pic of it now, since it has gone into the pot it has just powered on, im not sure why but everything i have learnt with the small buxus i have is they dont like there roots played with, but this one has been the complete opposite and has powered on since i root pruned and potted up. heres a pic of it after a bit of a pinching, and also of it on my little display bench next to some other trees i thought it looked nice
