Thought I would'nt burden you fine folk with multiple topics and decided to conglomerate my pots in this thread.


Guess i'll start with a little one, just finished. The colour was inspired by the thread on ellis pots and the red glaze.
I thought it may suit a Japanese Maple, so I planted a seedling in it to check the red tones.... not bad...

I hum'd and ha'd whether I should buy into this as I'm not a back-slapper but I wanted to say something that I hope you find useful.

If you want to make pots why not use clay? Many advantages in clay, not least of which is the artistic expression that is possible.
You live in Sydney? Many places to get help and a start. I would suggest contacting NSW Pottery Supplies at Homebush and ask their advice. If you're really keen, go to TAFE and put in the hard yards.
I look forward to seeing your first attempt at POTTERY and then you'll get so much advice and encouragement from many here.
I hope you keep going with your craft....we need more potters!

The pot is clay, so in-regards to my medium I guess I get the Kudos.
Perhaps what you may like to call into account, is my method of firing/curing them. It was baked in a micro-wave, to achieve more cracking to the drawn dry clay lip.

In regards to using cement, I say use what you can, if it works for you go for it! I'm not looking to sell these so a medium of $3.20 for 20kg suits me well. I can bake them in the oven or micro-wave and have paint / sealer on it within an hour. So from conception to creation the pot can take under two hours to complete, no week waiting time for the clay to dry before firing.

Soon I will look into hiring a kiln or joining a class, yet at the moment, what I create works fine for my plants. In fact I am starting to have trouble apart from weight, remembering which are my "shop bought" pots and which are my cement, cement / clay mix, clay ones.

This was an experiment, I took a water balloon, blew it up then dipped it in a clay / cement slurry several times to build up the thickness.
I let the slurry dry out to form un-even particles, so the final layers were textured. A couple more coats in new flowing clay /cement to seal and it was done.
Because of the textured coating the pot can be adjusted to suit many different angles. There are several drainage holes to accomodate the different angles.
