hi all this is my first collected celtis dug up in july but back to a bare stump no branches it had a huge root that stuck out that i have cut off i allso just cut and re wired a new apex and have defoliated for the second time these have to be the fastest growers around this has all happened in about 7-8 months the bottom branches are new and and have been left to thicken i snapped the new leader when carving pilled on the cut paste hopfully it lives if not grow another one in a month

Nice choice for dig, with a spread like that and the fluted tachigiari, these are the nebaris that are worth working on or not. Also has beautiful elegant movement. Good work, will make an arse whippn tree in the not too distant future.

Nice one Dayne. Nice movement and the muscling in that base is great. My plan would be to cut the roots hard under that base come spring so energy is transferred to the surface roots. I would put more soil in that pot over Winter to encourage fine rooting on the surface roots. You might have to build up the side of the pot to enable this.
We have these growing wild here but I have never liked them. Maybe you guys can change my mind

im thinking of repotting it soon and losing some of the big stuff and making some nicks on the main surface roots to start secondary roots off them may drop the new apex a little lower for a bit more taper thanks guys
how can you not love them this is 7months growth form bare stump and was my first yamadori i recon i could get these results now in 5 months

One of mine sits in the corner in the old esky I potted it in after collecting and gets the occasional squirt of water when I realise it is still alive. I have another that got a root over tree treatment from a fig. No where near as big as yours but like I said maybe these ones you collected will encourage me to go find some better ones
It sounds like it might even be able to handle a re-pot but I wouldn't recommend it. Unless it was to just sit the tree lower in the pot which I gather can't be done unless you cut the roots that I figure stopped you from planing it deeper to start with. If the root ball is solid already maybe you could trim a bit of wood of the bottom but you would need to be very careful. it is not what I would usually do. Not saying I haven't though.
I would not think there is any reason to nick the roots either. Just get those roots under the soil asap and when you give the tree no option but to use the surface roots it will be pushing roots all over in no time with the growth you state.
