Hi Guys,

For those who likes shohins. This tree was purchased August 2008 as part of the Canberra Bonsai Society bus trip to sydney. The tree was purchased from Bonsai Environment. A fellow club member picked the tree, saw potential but didn't want to buy, so I took it. Over the last 2 years I reduced the height from about almost 1 metre to just over 6 inch. Anyway to cut long story short I have attached a photo of the tree now styled Monday 150310. Final height of the tree is just over 5 inch from base to top.

do you have any progressional shots of this from when you were starting it at 1m high?

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately i do not have any progression shot anywhere. I only started taking photos mid to late last year. Am not sure if I have a photo of it in the background of other bonsai, but I haven't found any ot this stage.

Nice work Mario so far. I do see the need for some branches / foliage at the apex to cover the trunk. It looks to me, just an opinion flat at the top.
As in two dimensional.

At the moment when you have a full apex it will be a real stunner.

Mario, I really like what you have done so far, it does need a little depth, please build the branches and apex before the tree goes into a bonsai pot, there is no need to be overly eager to rush it into little or no growth. If it were an Elm, then yes into a pot.

What I also like is that you are using shimpaku, a very desireable species that has a limitation, in that trunks take ages to thicken, but you have brought the height down to a scale that works with the trunk caliper you already have. A lot of people 3 years into their bonsai journey would have made a 30cm tall tree from the stock, which would not have worked at all. I know I would have at that coresponding stage. I expect that a few of us that are reading this are nodding their heads too.

It can be done, credible mini bonsai from stock to pot is possible in 5 years.

this one will fill out really well, you might run into a little difficulty when secodary branch starts but that can be sorted too. the apex will fill up quite quickly with some pibhing and being in a collander it will give you a really solid fibrous root system
