Following some rather heated discussion on nebari I decided to post some pics of the nebari on trees I have grown from seed and cuttings. Most of these trees are in the early training stage and will need further adjustment.

that kurume looks like it has a solid trunk on it craig can we get a shot of the whole tree???

its interesting how some trees grow a better nebari than others especially in ground where it is faster, that was what i was trying to show with the celtis i put up, it still needs work but it has the base of a great nebari. the celtis species seem to naturally grow the nice nebari but there are some horrors out there to collect on hills and slopes, only on the flatter land did i find the nicer flared nebari.

the trees you put up will all get to where you want them as they have the base for it, do you have any specific way you get these trees to get the nebari you want or is it just basic root practices like cutting all downward growing roots, spreading the roots out radially etc. ?

I would love to see it a little more exposed brett, but if the rest of it and under the soil is as good as what i can see here, then you have every right to sing. For that is a fine nebari. Ray obviousy started that young and did a great job of it. At this point of the photo, it actualy makes a couple of these look ordinary. No offence Craig but they are not in line with the debate being held through last week. Specifically the ash and elm. The azalea is an absloute stunner!

Lookin good but i see nose dive's from that point. So It only gets better? or It will get better? None the less a very nice base!

I new you would have something to say No nose dives It flattens right out perfect as you could ask, but I will have to work out where to ramify from once I work out pot size
This is it's first season with me so I will get used to it before I go hacking into the roots.

Yes Ant you are right ash as I said I have trouble getting nice fine roots on ash maybe they should not be field grown might be much better developed in pots, one things for sure I am not going to find out I am not so keen on this species and from now on weed ones in the garden will go into the compost. I have hear a number of kokufu albums and have noticed only one chinese elm in them I also noticed in Japan they don't grow a lot of them, I believe this is because of the strong roots they develop. I have been growing some of these things for years and never seem to be able to get a nice fibrous root system like I can on other deciduous species. I wonder if other people have had the same experience ? I know they are very popular as bonsai here and they train nicely above ground but what about the roots ?

Good morning Craig, Yes Ash need to be done in boxes. The good thing is that you can keep culling the roots and they are more than happy to put new ones out all around that is. Defoliated 3 times in a season their window of oppertunity can be spectacular.

Chinese Elm, Yes this is a different kind of animal! A tree i purchased from Don Deluca last year, Field grown for 13 years I dont think Don is able to be as diligent as you with root work on Field grown trees for obvious reasons, as well as enviromental issues. He got around this with what Brett mentioned of a root wrap around the trunk from where ever he could access any, other side or underneath. The jury is still out on how this will work in future as far as i'm concerned. But the man grows one of the best trunks in the buissness!!! and i had to have this one. check it out;
