What is the survival chance of this?

It's this time of the year again when Brisbane city coulcil is cleaning up "Green rubbish". My neighbour across the road chopped down his azalea bush and dug up the stump to throw away. Damn! I have asked him before if I could have it and he said NO. I liked this azalea because it has double flowers and different flower colours on the same branch (pink flowers and white flowers).
anyway, the tap-root was chopped (by him). I cleaned the stump up and found quite alot of fine surface roots that spread horizontally (this may be a good thing). I guess that this is not a good time to collect it (didn't have a choice :) ) and wonder if it will survive.
Edit: add pics

Great find! I am in the process of digging an azalea almost that size at the moment, I may remove it tonight. :)

Yeah, it was ground grown and got big...but not really big. The big base of the trunk was under the soil line before and I didn't know It got that. Yet I've seen much bigger trunk before. I actually dug up some big ones last winter and they recovered well. However, I have some leaf disease of some sort: brown spores attached to underside of leaves.

Leigh, I think it was left out there for a bout 7 hours. I didn't see it when I left for work. The good thing is it was covered by some of its own chopped off branches.

Jamie, thanks for reminding me. I'll give it the same treatment that I gave the myrtle. Let's hope it works as I know that myrtles are much tougher. Just remember I need to get more sphagnum moss.

Well, I asked him last year when it was in flowers and he just moved in. I think he doesn't want to look after the plants so he gets rid of them now. Maybe he forgot that I wanted it (I was willing to pay some $$$ for it too).

Soak well with seasol and keep out of direct sun fro a cople of weeks and you should be good I think if it has not dried out too much
I took some out in the heat of summer a few years ago and they were good

You will find out in a few weeks no doubt

what a huge find and free to a good home, how would you think about sealing the ends of the cuts. For you ideas in the ground or use a strofoam box

Yes Shannon, will consider styling for those movements it if it does survive :) and bDog, I haven't seal the cuts yet as open cuts will help soaking it more effectively. However, I'll seal those with steri-prun or wound dressing before putting in grow box.
