hi guys, i went out and caught up with shan, dayne and regan yesterday. me, shan and regan went over to shands fathers place and went through a few ficus, i purchased three and have managed to style two of them before i ran out of wire anyways here they are as of a first styling, i was that keen to work on some trees i didnt get before shots, i hadnt had a chance to work on a tree for a couple of days and was getting edgy as i am on holidays and am at a resort, i nearly went out the night before last and was going to style some of the hedges out the front of the resort
with the banyan style i am not sure of the pot yet but it wont be a full canopy banyan i dont think, i am trying for a pad like banyan i think.
the semi will be extended a little more but not to much i dont think, i will be looking for a cresent moon pot for this one, so if anyone has one that will be good i think it will have to have a low wall on the pot not to high.

the banyan stands no more than 6 inches tall with a trunk of an inch and three quarters, the semi stands a bit over 6 inches and has a trunk of similar size.

great work jamie they'll be some fine trees soon, im liking the second one best . just dont get too carried away while your on holidays

thanks mate i reckon the semi is gonna be a corker in twelve months time, i do like a good semi. but i also love banyan styles too

Nice work Jamie the semi will come along real nice. I must find the time to get up to mick's place. Regan and yourself picked up some nice stock.

cheers mate i am quite partial to a semi i still need to expose more base i think as it has more flare under the soil, it will make the semi cascade branch look a lot better, i need to find a cresent pot for it now too. if any one has a smallish one that would be greatly appreciated! i dunno where i can buy them

Good to see that you got stuck into styling the figs mate. Dad said you are all welcome anytime and he is also looking to get rid of majority of his QSL figs (He's going to let them go a bit cheaper).

cheers mate appreciate the wire you lent me to do it! i would of gone a bit loopy if i had trees there i couldnt play with! im glad mick is happy with his customers i try and go back to those that have looked after me and you guys definately have the other one i got will make a nice twin trunk!
i will definately be keen in getting a hell of a lot more QSL how much does he want for them? i will take as many as i can afford!!!!

the little cascade has some deadwood on it, just around the back but it is a little soft, i know you use earles wood hardener, i reckon that stuff is just pva glue thats been watered down, what do you reckon? and do you put lime sulpher on first before the hardener?

Jamie, you just promoted yourselves from "addition" to "obssession" I guess you would have brought the trees if the room package includes a green house and would prefer that over swimming pool/spa and gym

The tree is great I would not over expose too early but would nuture a nice root system to expose later. Anyway, enjoy your holidays.

mate, i think its been obsession for a long time now can never have enough figs in my collection! and yea stuff the pool, maybe keep the spa but where is the green house!!! and bonsai stock yard!!!

these guys are tough as nails, to grow well in the soil they are in they have to be i wouldnt even second guess about exposing the surface roots on these two mate, they have a strong root ball, they will be going into diatomite when i get home and potted up then well fed and superthrived, these guys love the feed and will pump out new growth, i reckon i will see something in the next 3-4 weeks.

i think once i expose the base a little more it will be different but i do like things to be a little unconventional aswell i could probably smooth that kink going down a little to but i like it like that

well you probably wont beleive it but i had a look at the banyan this morning and i have a few little leaves opening up already, this tree is super strong i am happy with that! i will be getting it in diatomite when i get home most likely tomorrow, it will love that and a good feed!

this is the third tree i got over the other weekend, im not completely happy with it, this ones shoots and branches werent as abundant as the other two, i wasnt going to put it up until i had more shots but thought it would be good for a few to see what i do as andrewm asked me about it. anyways heres what we start with, the fig before doing anything, just taken out of the pot.
then from there i do a complete defoliation, to see what i have and what i can work with, there will be a large trunk going but thats it.
then it is a complete wire out and placement, i wire everything before i even think about placement, even what i want to cut off, just move the wire out the way and then cut, this will leave plenty of wire to anchor with.
as you can see in the next pic one thicker trunk has been removed and the smaller one wired in place, reason being it is easier to get good movement with a smaller branch or trunk than one of those big ones.

also in this pic you will see it has been flat cut, when i removed the soil the trunk just kept going and going and going, it was actually all the way to the bottom of the soil level thats an extra 6-8 inches long that i didnt expect, it probably would of been a decent tall tree image, but that wasnt what i was after.
from here it has been potted straight up, diatomite with some organics, you can see there is some airial roots there this will help feed the tree while a new nebari grows, it will take about 6-8 weeks for a root spread.
the pot isnt the best it has a crack nearly all the way through, its just holding on but it is all i had. it is sitting slightly low in the pot for the roots to develop a little easier. i didnt use any rooting hormone either, it either pops or it doesnt, thats the way i see it

thats about it guys, it goes into a sunny position and gets superthrived and seasoled for 3 weeks then goes onto ferts with superthrive and seasol in that regime too.

I should get in and do some smaller trees like yours, I did have a very small privit but it died, oh well. I'll just have tondo another one.
