Japanese Black Pine re-wire.

This is a tree i got from a close friend. At the time he had done some work on it but had reached a stage where he did not see a bright future for it and as a result of this he let me have it for a very reasonable price.

As soon as i received it, i restyled and changed the front to the front it is at today.

I tried to sell this tree before my last trip to Japan as i was in desperate need of funds, but had no takers at $450 so i kept it and after re-wiring it today i am glad it did not sell.

This morning i was moving a few trees around and this one had been wanting a re-wire for some time and i decided that today was the day. Its a bit of a rough job but it will get a better final wiring in a year or two when it is ready to show.

All in all it came up pretty well. there is a spot just below the apex on the right where i would have liked a branch but there was not one there when i got it. I may try to bud graft a branch this year if i get organised enough...
It will never be a top tree in my opinion but it is starting to take the form of something that i would like to show one day.

I have included a picture that was how it looked when it was for sale as well and the finished picture from today.

What do you all think? any suggestions?

This is how it looked when it was for sale last April or there abouts....

Any one have an opinion on a shari up the trunk? The straight lengths are bothering me......

im liking where it is heading mate ;)

maybe with the shari have it go to the inside of the bend in the trunk and around the back it might give it a feel of a little more movement?

I dont think i quite understand what you mean... do you mean take the shari from front to back?

Hi Jow,
I like the idea of a shari but perhaps only halfway (from the existing scar down) you could always extend it later.

nice may be the shari could start bottom right of trunk then run curved to the little scar then behind and up to the top twisted or a deep straight one allmost hollowed out abit

Hi Jow
I like the thought of the Shari, but only up to the bendy bit, The Virt you showed looks too long for me

i like the shai running up the height you have it at in the virt, but i think if you makehte shari run closer to the inside of the bend it will make hte tree appear as though it is a bit more curvy than it is. Just a thought though you have probably already done the work.

I have done a little more work on this pine...

I have made a shari extending from the original scar. It is quite thin for now and the heart wood has not been carved or shaped yet. I will let the wood dry out before doing that work. The shari will be extended over the next few years as the sap re-routes it self. I often find that after creating a shari the tree will extend the shari itself as the sap re-adjusts to its new paths.

I also grew a jin in the hope that it visually breaks a bit of the straightness on the upper section of trunk. I will probably connect this jin to the shari in coming years as the shari is refined.

That's all for now.....

i like it mate, i will be interested to see how you connect the shari to the jin without losing the section of bark that would run between the two, or if you are even concerned about that. will this swell like the way the juni do in your thread on how to make stock like the japanese?
