Something deciduous from the collection. This tree has great ramification and will make a great picture when it is nude in a couple of months.
I will post the pic of the nudie once I have taken one!

Leigh. This ash was dug up and commenced training around 1993 when it was cut back to a mere short trunk. The tree was given its final slanted styling in 2003. The Desert Ash is a popular bonsai subject especially in Australia, where experience has led to excellent results. The artist is a meticulous bonsai stylist who tolerates no compromises. This tree is defoliated several times during the growing season to achieve the fine ramification of the branches and the small leaf size.

does this one get cut back to a pair of leaves all the time to create the outline? i have always been interested in ash but have been cautious of the opposite leafing.

This one was defoliated 3 times this season and yes the compound leaf is also trimmed back to one or two sets of opposites.

This is a good looking tree. I especially love the mature bark.

i really need to defoliate mine more... i've never seen an ash with such small leaves!

Hi Grant, is this tree and also the one that Janet Sabey donated still in the collection? If so I would be very interested to know how they are doing and of course if possible, a pic or two?...did you take a pic of the tree in this thread when it was dorment?...if so, would love to see it nude!
Hey, sorry to be a pain , but I was wondering if you could do a thread or show some pics of the mini ash you have in development? I know I keep asking and maybe you wish you hadn't mentioned them? ...but I would love to see them please (whenever you are ready to show them that is!), as I am working on a couple of smallish shohin that aren't quite mame/mini's, and could do with some pointers/inspiration.

Hi Dario,

The Ash in this thread is one by Don DeLucca. We also have one from Janet and it is doing nicely. I will update today.

I will do a thread on the mini ash I am growing. Nothing special yet as they are just in their first six months of training and only two or three years old but it is a start.

Hi,

Here is the Ash in the thread at the moment. In consultation with the artist the apex is being lowered and shifted to the right. We defoliated last week and reduced the height as the first step towards its future; while at the same time allowing it to stay on show. We will reduce its height further as new buds develop and it is popping buds all over. It will be back in full leaf in a week or so.
Here is the other Ash as of today. It has undergone intensive wiring, defoliation and bud selection recently. It will be unwired and defoliate again in mid to late December. Although it is an old tree it is still relatively small.

The ramification in the foliage pads is awesome when seeing it without its clothes on!
I think you are totally correct in lowering and moving the apex to the right...it makes the tree seem more compact and even more balanced now that the apex is moving in the same direction as the trunk base emerges from the ground!...great job, and thanks so much for the update!!

Ps...you mention that this ash is not huge, so what is its height please?
