Hey, not sure if this is heresy but I found that The Reject Shop sometimes stocks bonsai pots, the same you'll see in Bunnings or other general nurseries except for 1/4 the price. $5 for a large pot, $3 for a mid and they were out of the smaller when I visited.
Not amazing quality pots or unique or particularly interesting but if, like me, you have a lot of things you'd like to start training and difficulty sourcing pots (or limited funds) they should do a decent job.

My thoughts exactly Tenka. When I have a tree worthy of spending big $$$ for a pot, I will. Not there yet!

G'day Tenka. Good training pots but you will need to create better drainage by making the holes larger. You will need a drill and a diamond hole cutter Probably 30mm

I do have a very cute Dwarf Balsam Fir and a Tsuga I'm looking forward to giving the home they deserve.

They seem to have only had one 15mm hole punch for all pot sizes 30mm, is it just the larger pots needing that much of a hole? Haven't seen many pots with drains that big before, does it make a difference what soil mix you're using?

See the photo below for good drainage holes. Always use an open free draining soil mix for your trees. If you do not have good drainage in your pots you run the risk of root rot and the tree will not thrive.

Hmm, is there a good way to tell if root rot is occurring? Most of my bonsai are in small, fairly shallow pots right now and the soil is mostly the 'Bonsai mix" you can buy at nurseries.
