[ID] Species ID ideas

Gday Guys,
Arranged to dig a couple of trees today but completely forgot to take a photo. Not sure what the tree is but it is deciduous, at the moment the leaves are yellow. Just wondering if you guys might be able to get some ideas together on what it might be.

Features:

Bark is light grey, semi rough, definitely not smooth like a crepe myrtle and not super rough either.

Leaves seem to be drooping, kinda 3 pointed but the points are nowhere near as defined as a trident.

Any ideas of what it might be?

Sounds a little like Gmelina arborea, or duck-foot beech. Leaves sort of shaped like a ducks foot.

My best guess just from description.

its not one of the Liquid ambers is it. they have bark like you discribed and a similar leaf to a tridend maple.

Imagine webos forgetting the camera
Many other maples would fit the description too - Acer ginnala for one. Is it a shrub or tree? Upright or spreading? etc, etc. A photo conveys so much, even subtle differences that someone familiar with the species will pick up on. Maybe post some pics when they come into leaf in spring.

i wouldnt count it out without seeing a pic first, i am pretty sure there is large variations in leaf, the trident can have very distinct lobes on one end of the scale to nearly barely any definition of the lobes. i beleive liquid ambers could have this trait in variation too...

Try Taiwan maple, Acer buergerianum var formosanum. It is a variety often used as bonsai. It produces far more seed than the trident and at a younger age too. The leaves and habit match yours.

*EDIT* Definitely not a Liquidambar. The leaf arrangement is wrong. This plant has opposite leaves, typical of the aceraceae (maple) family.

Could it be Field Maple - Acer campestre?
